𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐮𝐝𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐢’𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬

NEW YORK, 23rd September, 2025…Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. E.P. Chet Greene has issued an urgent call on the international community to address with absolute urgency Haiti’s deepening political and humanitarian crisis.

Greene, who is a member of Antigua and Barbuda’s delegation attending the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, was at the time speaking at a high level Ministerial Meeting of the Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Haiti. The group was established by the UN’s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) to coordinate international assistance for Haiti and serve as the centre of a multilateral forum for addressing the Caribbean country’s long-term developmental challenges.

But with lasting stability remaining an elusive goal, Greene advised the UN that without immediate and sustained support for the urgent needs in Haiti, “today’s emergency will become tomorrow’s protracted crisis.”

He identified the areas of security, institutional strengthening and the humanitarian emergency as major imperatives in resolving the Haitian crisis.
According to Greene, the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support Mission and the Haitian National Police need sustained financing and in-kind contributions. “We urge partners to close the funding gap swiftly and ensure that rules of engagement respect human rights and Haitian ownership,” Greene stated.

While acknowledging the work of the Caricom-mandated Eminent Persons Group in facilitating dialogue on transitional governance and elections, Minister Greene said it too needs support.
“International partners should provide technical and financial support to this process, enabling Haitians to rebuild legitimate, accountable institutions,” he stated.

He lamented that the Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan also needs urgent funding so that food, healthcare, and protection, can reach all those at risk from the crisis in Haiti.
“The funding gap in Haiti’s investment and recovery plans must be addressed,” Minister Greene stressed.

The Antigua and Barbuda Minister however reminded that even with his call for international action, “Haiti must remain owned by the people of Haiti and Haitian-led, with CARICOM and the wider international community serving as partners, not directors, of Haiti’s future.”
