Young Jewel Andrew Says Guyana Stint Another Opportunity to Grow

Eighteen-year-old West Indies batter, Jewel Andrew, believes the opportunity to represent the Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) at next month’s ExxonMobil Global Super League in Guyana, will present him with another opportunity to further develop as a player while rubbing shoulders with some of the best in the world.

“I feel baby steps are better than big steps at this point for me so I am just trying to learn and just take it one step at a time. I think that, as a cricketer, taking opportunities is something you need to do and I was called upon to be a part of this tournament so it’s just about grabbing the opportunities at this point and not really focussing on T20 per se but just trying to hold on to any opportunity that I can at this point,” he said.

Last Friday, the Antiguan was named in a 15-man Guyana Amazon Warriors squad that will seek to dethrone defending champions Rangpur Riders (Bangladesh) during the July 10-18 tournament.

Andrew said he was happy to accept the offer as it also presented him with an opportunity to turn out for what he dubbed a ‘second home’.

“I feel like it’s my second home to be honest because my mom is from Guyana so it’s a bit of [me] repaying her by accepting the selection. I just want to be one of the top batters in the team and hopefully give the fans something to watch. For me, it’s just all about learning at this point; I haven’t really set personal goals as yet but I just want to enjoy the experience and try to do as best as I can for the team,” the player said.

Andrew turned out for local club Pigotts Crushers in the ABCA’s Super40 on Saturday making 52 from 27 deliveries in his team’s 57 runs loss to defending champions, Liberta Blackhawks. He slammed three fours and two sixes during his 40 minutes at the crease.

Full GAW Squad: The squad includes Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Shimron Hetmyer, Akeal Hosein Imran Tahir, Evin Lewis, Romario Shepherd, Gudakesh Motie, Dwaine Pretorius, Amir Jangoo, Moeen Ali, Johnson Charles, Mark Adair, Saud Shakeel, Shamar Springer and Jewel Andrew.
