Two young women were arrested Thursday night following an allegation of theft at the Epicurean Supermarket on Friars Hill Road.
The incident unfolded around 9:45pm when the store’s security supervisor reported that two women had taken various grocery items and left the premises without paying.
A uniformed police officer who was on duty at the location intercepted the suspects outside the store’s exit. Upon being approached and informed that they were suspected of theft, one of the women reportedly admitted to having an unpaid item in her possession.
Police conducted a thorough investigation that included interviewing the reporting supervisor and reviewing the store’s video surveillance footage. A search of the suspects’ belongings – a black knapsack and shopping bag – revealed several allegedly stolen items, including a calculator, sandwich maker and sandwich-making supplies.
The two suspects, aged 22 and 19, both residents of Cassada Gardens, were subsequently arrested on suspicion of larceny and transported to St John’s Police Station for processing.
Authorities confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the matter.
At this time, it is not known if the Epicurean Supermarket has issued a public statement regarding the incident.
Anyone with additional information about this incident should contact the St John’s Police Station.
