A 31-year-old construction worker was convicted in St John’s Magistrates’ court for several traffic infractions yesterday.
Hope was stopped by police from the Special Services Unit (SSU) who were on patrol. The officers were on the Cashew Hill main road when they observed Hope’s white Honda Civic travelling in an easterly direction on a by-road.
The officers became suspicious and they asked Hope to stop. The police observed that the vehicle had an expired licence disk dated February 2025.
When officers requested his driver’s licence, Hope responded that it was in his wallet, which was lost. However, during a search, the police found Hope’s wallet inside the vehicle with an expired licence, dated September 27, 2024.
Hope, who said that he had just purchased the vehicle and took a chance to move it after he was unable to get a ride, had his licence suspended for 30 days.
He was convicted and fined $2,500 for driving without insurance, which has to be paid in 30 days. Failing this, he will spend 30 days in prison.
Acting Chief Magistrate Dexter Wason convicted and reprimanded him for driving an unlicenced vehicle.
