Curtain Bluff Resort has proudly received an honorary Platinum Certification from Green Globe, becoming the first property in Antigua and Barbuda to attain this prestigious milestone. This recognition highlights Curtain Bluff’s unwavering, decades long commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and community engagement, setting a benchmark for responsible tourism in the region.
Green Globe, the world’s leading certification for sustainable tourism for over 30 years, recognizes businesses that demonstrate the highest standards in environmental, social, and economic sustainability. The Platinum Certification is awarded to select members that have been certified for 10 consecutive years, signifying long term dedication and excellence in sustainable operations.
At the recently hosted Caribbean Travel Marketplace in Antigua and Barbuda, Wendy Walker-Drakes, Managing Director of Green Globe Caribbean, officially presented the Plaque of Platinum Certification to Toya Turner, Reservations and Revenue Manager at Curtain Bluff Resort. The occasion was made even more special with the presence of Charles “Max” Fernandez, Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment, who joined the celebration and extended his congratulations, highlighting national support for Curtain Bluff’s leadership in sustainable tourism.
Curtain Bluff’s journey toward Platinum has been championed by a dedicated internal Green Team and spearheaded by passionate individuals committed to making a lasting impact
Anique Goodwin, Human Resource Manager and one of Curtain Bluff’s key Green Globe leaders, said: “As one of the two key people on property championing the Green Globe initiative, I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to our amazing Green Team and the entire Curtain Bluff family. Being a part of this process to attain this prestigious award not only benefits Curtain Bluff, it also has a major impact on each of us in our own homes. As the effects of global warming threatens our daily lives, I have come to realize that if we all continue to, reuse, reduce and recycle it would make a great impact for future generations to come.”
Karim King, Security, Landscape and Leisure Manager and another key leader of the Green Globe initiative at Curtain Bluff, added: “With the Old Road community being my place of residence since birth, I have a passion as well as a personal connection to all the sustainable and environmental initiatives that Curtain Bluff has created and maintained since its inception. From the adoption of the Old Road School and surrounding communities, it has created an environment where both villagers and the resort can strive successfully with one goal and one aim, which is to take care of each other. Having acquired such a prestigious accolade, I hope that this will be an encouragement for the younger generation to take action and to ensure a brighter future for generations to come.”
Building on its deep-rooted connection with the Old Road community, Curtain Bluff has developed a robust program focused on long-term community development. The resort has formally adopted the Old Road Primary School, established the Old Road Fund to provide scholarships up to the tertiary level, and hosts weekly Old Road Fund Tennis Clinics every Saturday and Sunday for selected children from the surrounding villages of Curtain Bluff. A number of these young participants are also sponsored by the resort to attend tennis-focused teen summer camps in the United States. In addition, Curtain Bluff leads ongoing environmental initiatives, including beach clean-ups and tree planting at Morris Bay Public Beach, and offers continued support for local needs through clean-up campaigns and aid to the physically challenged. These initiatives reflect the resort’s commitment to giving back and helping the community thrive alongside its success.
Birte Pelayo, Chief Executive Officer of Green Globe Certification, praised the resort’s achievements: “We are thrilled to extend our warmest congratulations to Curtain Bluff Resort in Antigua and Barbuda on their incredible achievement of Green Globe Certification Platinum status. This award signifies that the resort has completed 10 years of continuous and independent certification. Curtain Bluff has been a pioneer in water management, producing its own potable water through reverse osmosis and using grey water to irrigate. Use of these systems means the resort does not take water from municipal supplies. Curtain Bluff is also a leader in eliminating plastic pollution, reducing use of plastic in the resort by 40%. These are just some of the many initiatives, including investment in the local community, that sees Curtain Bluff as a leader in sustainable tourism in Antigua and Barbuda.”
As Curtain Bluff Resort continues to champion sustainable hospitality and community well-being, this Platinum Certification stands as a symbol of excellence, resilience, and forward-thinking tourism in Antigua and Barbuda.
