Antigua and Barbuda continues to expand its Rat Island cruise port to accommodate larger yachts and small cruise vessels, aiming to boost its cruise and yachting sector.
Chief Executive Officer of Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority (ABPA) Darwin Telemaque said this expansion involves developing the northern precinct of Rat Island, with full project completion expected by October 2026. The project is expected to create significant jobs and bring in revenue from cruise tourism.
“That area would be a perfect location for that type of industrial work activity to be based. There are significant discussions ongoing as it relates to how we position the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority to meet the global regulatory requirements that emerge upon us,” he stated.
He said Rat Island sits on about 15 acres of land, and the hill could also add some additional land in the waters north of the port.
Telemaque says the aim is to position Antigua to be one of the leaders in that space and Rat Island could be that location to do so.
