Renovations at St John’s Police Station nearing completion

Renovation of the St John’s Police Station is nearing completion with over 70 percent of the work completed.

During an interview with Observer media, Deputy Commissioner of Police Albert Wade hinted that work that is currently taking place at the Newgate Street facilitycould wrap up by the end of next month.

“So, I think they are presently just about 75% complete. I think they are looking at a completion date in June. Presently, they are painting the exterior, they are preparing the interior for painting, the electrician is putting in the fixtures, the plumber is laying his pipes, and, hopefully, for carnival St John’s will be back home. If not by June, I don’t envision it going beyond June based on the pace they are working,” Wade said.

Work on the station commenced last year after officers staged a sit-in to protest the dilapidated state of the building, which was infested with mold and termites, in addition to having serious structural problems.

The building housed several departments including the Guard Desk, the Criminal Records Office, the Prosecution Department, and the Minor Offences Department.

The St John’s Police Station is currently operating from the former Antigua Port Authority compound on Bay Street in Villa.
