The Leeward Islands Women displayed remarkable fighting spirit and bowling discipline despite falling to a seven-wicket defeat against Guyana in their opening match of the CWI T20 Blaze at Arnos Vale Playing Field in Kingstown.
After posting 88 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs, the Leeward Islands pushed Guyana all the way, making them work hard for their victory as the Guyanese reached 89 for 3 with just 10 balls to spare.
Captain Amanda Edwards led from the front for the Leeward Islands with a courageous 28 off 29 deliveries, while opener Qiana Joseph provided uncharacteristic but valuable support, crafting a determined 25 off 41 balls
After setting what appeared to be a challenging target on a slow pitch, the Leeward Islands bowlers produced an impressive performance that nearly turned the match around.
Shawnisha Hector was outstanding with the new ball, delivering a masterclass in seam bowling as she conceded just 14 runs in her four overs, including a maiden. Her opening spell put immediate pressure on the Guyanese batters, setting the tone for a disciplined bowling effort.
The Leewards continued to chip away with wickets at crucial intervals. Davronique Maynard struck early, removing Katana Mentore for just 6 with a brilliant caught and bowled. Rozel Liburd then claimed the important wicket of Realeanna Grimmond (33) just as she was looking to accelerate.
Edwards showcased her all-round abilities by dismissing the dangerous Shabika Gajnabi for 10, reducing Guyana to 65 for 3 and giving her team real hope of a comeback. Jahzara Claxton bowled with control and intelligence, conceding just 12 runs from her three overs.
The Leeward Islands will now look to build on this encouraging bowling performance when they face Barbados in their next fixture on May 3rd, where they’ll aim to secure their first win of the tournament.
