Jolly Harbour community launches recycling initiative with GoodHumans268

Jolly Harbour has joined the fight against plastic pollution as GoodHumans268 delivered nine recycling bins to the area yesterday, threrby launching a pilot recycling project aimed at businesses and homeowners.

The environmental organisation handed over the bins to Porter Palmer Services Limited as part of its expanding student community service recycling project.

Joshuanette Francis of GoodHumans268 said the initiative hopes to encourage widespread participation throughout the community.

“We’re hoping businesses, households, events and everyone gets into the spirit of recycling. This is actually a pilot where we’re encouraging businesses, households and homeowners to sign on to the project,” Francis said.

Camilla Sukumaran, representing property owners at Jolly Harbour, received the bins which will be placed around the commercial centre.

“I’m delighted to be here this morning with Joshuanette to receive these nine bins. As she said, this is just the beginning for Jolly Harbour,” Sukumaran told Observer media.

According to Sukumaran, the recycling initiative will expand beyond the commercial centre in the future.

“We’re just starting the conversation with the Marina; I believe they will take it on. And also, I’ve been communicating with homeowners in Jolly Harbour to encourage them to sign up,” she said.

Sukumaran emphasised the importance of recycling for both the local community and the nation.

“It’s important for Jolly Harbour because it’s important for Antigua. We need to not pollute at all, we need to recycle plastic because it is a pollutant and it gets into every part of our water systems,” she explained.

Francis highlighted that plastic pollution has become an international concern, noting several high-profile environmental initiatives focusing on the issue.

“The King’s Baton was here last week, and the King’s Baton’s focus was on plastic pollution. When CHOGM [Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting] comes here next year, there’s a lot of attention surrounding the number of plastics that end up in the ocean,” Francis said.

GoodHumans268 has already achieved significant results in its recycling efforts, according to Francis.

“We’ve been successful in diverting a million of them from the landfill and it needs more work. It’s not perfect. However, I’m not looking for perfection, I’m looking for a start,” she said.

Francis emphasised that the initiative is about changing the way society views and manages waste, with potential long-term benefits for air quality and addressing landfill fires that affect the community.
