Information Commissioner’s Office to be ready in two weeks, PM says

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has revealed that the establishment of a physical office for the Information Commissioner Anthony Athill has been delayed — at least for a couple more weeks.

Speaking during last week’s sitting of the House of Representatives, Browne revealed that the Francis Building on High Street has been redesignated as the official location for the Information Commissioner’s Office.

“As advised by the Attorney General, that whole office on High Street, the Francis Building, has been determined to be the office where he will operate from,” Browne stated. “Access repairs have been made and should be completed within a matter of weeks.”

The announcement comes nearly three months after the Prime Minister had initially indicated in February that the physical office would be established within 30 days, complete with necessary tools and resources to enable the Information Commissioner to execute his duties.

Athill, who was tipped for the position since September 2024, has faced several delays in the confirmation of the swearing in for the position which had been vacant since the end of Joycelyn Palmer’s tenure in 2021.

Palmer, a retired educator, had served as Information Commissioner since her appointment in 2019, succeeding Alister Thomas, who held the position from 2012 to 2018.
