Breast Friends president outlines agenda for current term

The newly elected President of Breast Friends, Michelle Lynch, has outlined plans for her presidency which includes expanding the organization’s social media presence and securing a permanent home for the cancer support group.

Lynch, a 16-year cancer survivor, assumed leadership following the organization’s Annual General Meeting last month and educating more people throughout the year are among her top priorities.

“What I want to do in terms of education is increasing our social media platform [presence]. Cancer is not in October only, but [throughout the year],” Lynch explained.

She added that Breast Friends will be planning to create short testimonial videos featuring its members sharing their experiences to help the public better understand the reality of breast cancer.

“Although we’ve been out here for years, persons are still saying they don’t know; they still cannot put a face to breast cancer,” she noted.

Meanwhile, she added that the organisation will be looking to find a more permanent headquarters for Breast Friends, which currently meets at the Lions’ Den.

“If we have a home, we have persons that are retired who can volunteer. We could have a social worker on Thursdays and persons can come and talk to that person,” Lynch said.

“We have been looking; it’s not that we haven’t been trying. We’ve encountered quite a number of roadblocks, but I’m going to be putting it back high on my agenda.”

Lynch also revealed plans to honour the organisation’s stalwarts and corporate supporters who have stood by them over the years, and to resume holding educational seminars that have been on hiatus for several years.

To improve organizational efficiency, Lynch said she will establish subcommittees such as the fundraising committee, welfare committee, and social committee.

“I am hoping that each executive member can chair a committee … getting everybody involved in the running of Breast Friends,” she explained.

The new executive includes Vice President Marlene Christopher, Secretary Lettice Reynolds, Assistant Secretary Cecilia James, Treasurer Lynette Freeland, and Immediate Past President Eunetta Bird.
