American-born Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the new pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV, the Vatican announced today.
The 69-year-old Chicago native becomes the first American to lead the Roman Catholic Church, breaking a long-standing tradition where leadership has predominantly come from European countries.
Prevost, who previously served as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops under Pope Francis, was considered a compromise candidate with perspectives aligned with his predecessor but with his own distinct leadership style.
The new pontiff brings significant experience from his missionary work in Peru and his leadership of the worldwide Augustinian order, where he served two consecutive terms as prior general.
Vatican observers note that Prevost’s election represents continuity with Pope Francis’ vision regarding environmental concerns, outreach to the poor and migrants, while possibly bringing more emphasis on administrative reforms.
The election comes after only two days of voting in the conclave, suggesting strong consensus among the 133 cardinal electors gathered in Vatican City.
Prevost will now lead the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics as they face challenges including declining church attendance in Western countries and ongoing efforts to address clergy sexual abuse scandals.
A formal installation Mass for Pope Leo XIV is expected to be scheduled in the coming days at St. Peter’s Basilica.
