UHSA partners with Good Humans 268 as waste management project scales up

The University of Health Sciences Antigua (UHSA), located in Piccadilly, is making waves in the fight against climate change by launching a comprehensive on-campus recycling initiative — becoming the second tertiary institution on the island to do so.

Partnering with the environmental non-profit Good Humans 268 Inc., UHSA is now actively participating in the Student Community Service Recycling Project, a countrywide movement focused on improving waste separation and sustainability practices across Antigua and Barbuda.

With support from the Sandals Foundation and the GEF Small Grants Programme, the university is now equipped with labelled bins for plastic bottles, cans, and glass. It has equipped students with knowledge about best practices for waste management. Joshuanette Francis, founder of Good Humans 268 Inc., explained that this is just the beginning of a larger vision.

“We’re starting with schools, but the plan is much bigger — we’re building toward a future of Eco-Communities, Eco-Businesses, and Eco-Events. It’s about reshaping how waste is handled in every part of society.”

UHSA President Dr Adedayo Akande welcomed the program, saying it aligns with the university’s mission to create responsible leaders in healthcare. “You can’t separate environmental health from human health. We’re proud to be part of a movement that merges education with sustainability.”

With over one million items diverted from the landfill, this is just the start of change in Antigua and Barbuda. UHSA’s involvement signals a commitment to scaling the effort island-wide.
