Prime Minister the Honourable Gaston Browne is once again calling on all residents of Antigua and Barbuda to take part in the National Housing and Population Census, which officially begins on Census Day, June 25.
Emphasizing the census’s importance, PM Browne highlighted that it is a crucial initiative for determining the nation’s population—an essential factor for effective national planning in key areas such as education, healthcare, and social development.
He stressed that the census should remain a non-political issue, as the data collected will be just as valuable to the opposition as it is to the government. “It is your civic duty to participate in the census, and I am urging all residents—everyone living in the country—to take part,” he stated.
The Prime Minister also called on Leader of the Opposition, Jamale Pringle, and other members of the United Progressive Party (UPP) to support the initiative by encouraging their supporters to ensure they are counted.
Addressing concerns from the non-national community, PM Browne reassured them that they too should participate, as the census aims to determine the total number of residents, not distinguish between citizens and non-citizens.
“In fact, a person’s immigration status cannot be shared by the census department, so there is no risk of deportation for anyone participating in the census. Anyone found sharing such information unlawfully will face serious legal consequences,” he affirmed.
He further noted that his administration does not have a history of deporting individuals, except in cases where legal violations have occurred.
Additionally, PM Browne explained that the census will provide critical insights into morbidity and mortality rates, among other key data, which are essential for informed national planning.
