Kamla vows to fund election promises by cutting government waste

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has said her government will be able to fund its election promises by cutting out the waste that exists in the government.

Speaking at a political meeting last evening in Penal, Persad-Bissessar addressed questions that economists and government representatives had about her election promises which they said were unsustainable.

“We will find that money,” Persad-Bissessar declared.

“They spent $530 billion…that is more than any other government has ever spent in the history of our country.”

“We will redirect that PNM eat a food money to support land for the landless, to repave our roads, we’ll take that money to implement a comprehensive traffic alleviation plan and supply water in your taps.”

She accused the government of wasting billions over the last decade that could have been used to pay public servants higher salaries and invest in programs such as the Government Assistance for Tuition Expenses Programme (GATE) to give citizens more opportunities to develop themselves.

The opposition leader said the government’s wage offer of four per cent under the guise of not having enough money is unfair to workers when salaries of high office holders were increased by double digit percentages.
