Dominica: Court grants mother bail over her part in viral attack between schoolgirls

The mother of a 14-year-old schoolgirl seen in an altercation alongside her daughter with other minors in a video that went viral over the weekend has been granted bail.

Adama Shillingford appeared before a magistrate court in Roseau today, April 7 to face four criminal charges in connection with the incident.

Shillingford has been charged with battery on a minor, assault on a minor, aiding and abetting and possession of an offensive weapon.

The video which garnered thousands of views and sparked outrage shows one female student, accompanied by her mother, during the altercation, retrieving a bottle from a bag that she carried from which she threw a liquid substance in the direction of the face of another student.

In the video, Shillingford could also be seen wielding a knife while her 14-year-old daughter threw the substance, who bystanders alleged was alkali.

Shillingford has been accused of urging her daughter to use the liquid and providing the substance to be used in the fight.

She initially pleaded guilty to the weapons charge but denied the others. However, changed her plea to not guilty following brief consultation with her attorney.

The prosecution did not object and bail was set to EC$10,000, with the condition that Shillingford report to the Roseau Police Headquarters every Wednesday.

A separate bail hearing will be held for her daughter.
