Defending champions Ravens got off to a blistering start in their defence of the Gillian Brazier Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night, rallying to a massive 65-37 triumph over debutants Barbados Dover Tigers when they met at the JSC basketball complex.
Playing in the feature game of a double-header, Ravens dominated the contest from start to finish with Sydney Cowan leading the charge with 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Talya McNary contributed with 12 points and five rebounds while Audrey Smart added 10 points and seven rebounds to the winning effort for the Canadian team.
Maynya Haynes was the top scorer for Barbados, sinking a game-high of 14 points while grabbing 13 rebounds. She also had three steals and two blocks.
In Tuesday’s other contest, Canadian-based Canucks easily beat Antigua and Barbuda’s Wings Tough Gals 79-17 also at JSC.
Canucks were led by Alexia Schryburt with 21 points while Natalie Van Heswyk contributed with 19 points, 14 rebounds and two assists. Anna Petridis and Genevieve Stephens sank 13 and 10 points respectively. Petridis also grabbed 10 rebounds.
In a losing effort, Jodaliah Constant led the scoring for the Antiguans with five points. She also grabbed four rebounds and dished two assists. There were contributions of four points each from Alyssa Jardine and Melissa Haywood. Jardine recorded seven rebounds while Haywood had nine.
On Monday, Canucks had the better of Dover Tigers 80-30 in their opening contest with Petridis hitting a game-high of 21 points for the victors. In the other clash, Stingers enjoyed an 80-29 triumph over Tough Gals. Hailey Fennema sank a game-high of 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the victors.
