Kevon Small, 37, a father of three from Martin’s Village who is accused of causing the death of 50-year-old Colin Anderson Joseph in September 2021 sought to explain to the court what transpired that night in an unsworn statement.
Yesterday, Small recounted the events of September 1 which eventually led to Joseph’s death.
“I proceeded onto New Street to go onto Market Street. Before approaching the junction I indicated to turn right unto Market Street. Before I reached the junction, I slowed down to allow traffic and when everything was cleared, I turned and felt an impact. And that’s when I stopped the vehicle,” he said in his unsworn statement.
Small, who was 34 at the time of the incident, allegedly ran over Joseph with his vehicle at the junction of Market and New street. Joseph was rushed to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre with a cracked skull and injuries to his left leg.
Doctors declared him brain dead as there was no brain activity based on tests. He was supported by a ventilator but eventually succumbed to his injuries.
Now that the prosecution and defence have closed their cases, they are both expected to make closing arguments to the jury this morning. The Crown will seek to convince the jury that based on the evidence it presented Small is guilty, while his attorney Wendel Alexander will seek to poke holes in the prosecution’s case during his closing arguments.
Small reportedly has a medical condition in which he suffers chest pains on the left side that make him dizzy and gasp for breath.
According to a police officer who testified, Small admitted that his condition is triggered by stress, anxiety, and exhaustion, but he was not taking medication because he does not like pills.
However, there was no evidence that Small was experiencing an episode at the time of the accident.
