Following the death of a female police officer, who reportedly took her own life, the Wadadli Initiative for Self-care and Healing (WISH) says this tragedy calls for the nation to “confront the reality of mental health struggles with urgency, empathy, and action”.
WISH also used the opportunity to join the many others who are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Senior Sergeant Iyo Malone.
“Our deepest condolences go out to her family, loved ones, colleagues in the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, and the Potters community as they navigate this devastating time.
“Iyo Malone was more than a dedicated officer – she was a protector, a servant of the people and a beloved member of our community. Her passing is a stark and painful reminder of the unseen burdens that so many carry, often in silence,” WISH said in a statement.
As persons continue to speculate about the incident on social media and in other forums, WISH is encouraging persons to desist from such conversation and to honour Malone’s memory with dignity and respect.
The organization advises, “Instead of engaging in harmful gossip, let us use this moment to educate ourselves and extend grace to those who may be struggling. Every unkind word can deepen someone’s pain, and every act of compassion can be a lifeline.”
A consistent advocate for mental health issues, WISH said this condition is as real and critical as physical health, to which no one is immune.
It stressed that persons who are feeling overwhelmed should normalize seeking support without the fear of being judged.
“If you or someone you know is experiencing distress, please reach out. You are not alone. WISH remains committed to providing safe spaces for open dialogue, education, and support. Let us turn our grief into action by advocating for stronger mental health policies, accessible resources, and a culture of kindness.
“To the family, colleagues, and friends of Senior Sergeant Iyo Malone – we stand with you in this time of sorrow. May her legacy inspire us all to do better, to be more understanding, and to uplift one another in love and support. If you are struggling, please reach out to someone you trust or seek professional help,” the statement concluded.
