Rangers maul Blackhawks, Swetes beat Tryum and Empire held to draw as First Division promotion race heats up

The recent three-week break seemingly did very little to stymie the progress of Ottos Rangers as they inflicted a huge 10-0 beating on former top flight champions Liberta Blackhawks on Monday, surging to the top of the First Division standings with 33 points after 13 showings.

There were hattricks from former national striker, Junior Benjamin and Josue Arias in the massive win at the ABFA’s Technical Center, as the competition resumed following a lengthy halt to facilitate deliberations by both the disciplinary and appeals committees regarding a prematurely-ended clash between Rangers and SAP almost four weeks ago.

Arias hit the back of the net in minutes 40, 45 and 60 while Benjamin struck in minutes 56, 58 and 77. Jevaughn Adams chipped in with a double, scoring in minutes 62 and 66 while Howayne James struck once, hitting past the Liberta custodian in the 47th minute.

Liberta’s Damien Jeremiah had gifted Rangers their opening strike after he inadvertently put the ball into the back of his own net in the 25th minute.

Rangers move three points ahead of Jennings United who have 30 from 13 showings while Freeman’s Village Scorpions are third with 26 points.

The loss was Liberta’s 13th in 14 showings as they continue to linger at the bottom of the standings with just three points.

Meanwhile, Swetes FC enjoyed a 3-1 victory over Tryum FC at the Tryum playing field.

Former national striker Kimoi Alexander struck twice, hitting the back of the net in minutes 49 and 90+2. Juwan Roberts scored the other goal in the 76th minute as Swetes move to 27 points from 14 matches and into the top four on the standings. Tryum remain on 14 points from 14 outings.

In the other match contested Monday, former top flight champions, Empire FC played from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw with Urlings FC when they met at the Keithley Sheppard Recreational Park.

Devlyn Williams had given Urlings the lead on minute 15 before Empire’s Carlos Solomonnullified the strike with a 26th minute goal of his own.

Empire move to 27 points from 14 showings and third on the standings while Urlings are third from bottom with nine points after 14 showings.
