Griffth double keeps Grenades in title hunt

A double-strike from Kamol Griffith ensured Grenades FC stayed in the Premier Division title race with a 3-1 victory over Pigotts Bullets at the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) Technical Center on Sunday.

The win moves the Jennings men to 45 points form 17 showings, just one point behind defending champions, All Saints United with two matches left in the competition.

Griffith struck in minutes 45 and 59 to give Grenades a three-nil advantage after Barrington Blake had put the Jennings men ahead on minute 44. Akeem Isaac scored the lone goal for Bullets when he struck in the 68th.

The loss was Bullets’ seventh in 17 matches as they remain 28 points and fifth on the standings.

Also on Sunday, John Hughes picked up a crucial 2-1 triumph over relegation threatened Willikies FC, moving to 21 points from 16 matches and seventh on the 14-team standings.

Troy Jules scored both goals for John Hughes, netting in minutes 26 and 45 while Dejzmatch Christian pulled a goal back for Willkies in the 67th. Willikes remains on 11 points and second from bottom on the standings.

There were seven yellow cards and two red cards issued during the contest with five John Hughes players including Jules, all shown yellow by the match referee Anthony James. Juniah Thomas and Novelle Francis, both of Willikies, were red-carded.

In the other match contest Sunday, Greenbay Hoppers won only their third match of the competition, blanking Green City 3-0. The former champions were led by a hattrick from Yoandir Puga Estevez who netted in minutes 36, 84 and 90+5.

Nine yellow and two red cards were issued during the contest with six Green City players issued yellow cards and one red card. Three yellow cards and one red was issued to Hoppers.
