The Crown called its last witness yesterday in the murder trial of Shawn Mussington and subsequently the prosecution closed its case.
Mussington is accused of the November 14, 2020, stabbing death of a Jamaican hairdresser, Simone Whyte-Barrington.
Whyte-Barrington received a fatal stab to her left chest area which caused massive blood loss and her death. This incident occurred while she was attending a gathering upstairs the Hitachi Centre building at the corner of Tanner and Market streets.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution did not question the female police constable but allowed the defence to make inquiries of her about the incident.
The officer told the court that she knew the Jamaican woman for five years while living in Swetes. She said Whyte-Barrington was her beautician and had lived with her for a period from June 2020.
During cross examination, defence attorney Wendel Alexander asked the officer if she knew Mussington, to which she admitted she did.
She told the court that the accused and Whyte-Barrington had lived together at some point. However, she revealed that Mussington never visited when she was living with Whyte-Barrington.
The female officer said she never saw the duo in any argument.
According to her, Whyte-Barrington was brought to Antigua by someone, whom she described as her (the officer’s) adopted brother.
Mussington is expected to mount his defence against the capital offence today.
Apparently, he is expected to make an unsworn statement, while Alexander intends to call no more than two witnesses to testify on Mussington’s behalf.
The case is being heard before Justice Tunde Bakre.
