Government Information Services Antigua & Barbuda Said- Prime Minister the Hon. Gaston Browne has called for a further push towards a globe that is decarbonized.
He stated that the issue of decarbonization must remain at the forefront in the fight against climate change, as the survival of the planet depends on this.
During his remarks at the 48th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM, the Prime Minister thanked His Excellency Mr. Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations (UNSG), who addressed the meeting prior, for his support towards the plight of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and described the UNSG as a champion of SIDS.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the success of the SIDS4 Conference which Antigua and Barbuda hosted in May, 2024.
He called for collaboration of the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS) and the Bridgetown Initiative, in order to maximize access to concessional funding for developing countries, and to ensure that matters of concern to developing countries continue to be heard globally.
Prime Minister Browne also remarked on the work of the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI), which he served as Chairman.
He described the MVI as an important tool for development, which takes into account vulnerability and its link to development.
He further stated that the MVI should serve to compliment the (Gross National Income) GNI, as both metrics can provide developing countries with greater access to concessional funding to advance development.
