Opposition raises concerns over delay in National Population Census

PM Addresses Delays in National Census, Timeline Remains Unclear

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has acknowledged delays in conducting Antigua and Barbuda’s long-awaited national population census but did not provide a definitive timeline for its completion.

Speaking in Parliament, Browne faced questions from opposition members about when the census—originally scheduled to take place years ago—would be conducted. The census is considered critical for planning and resource allocation, particularly in areas such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

While Browne did not specify a start date, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing the process.

The census, typically conducted every ten years, has faced multiple setbacks, including logistical challenges and resource constraints. The government had previously cited the COVID-19 pandemic as a major factor in the delay, but no clear reason was given for the continued postponement.

Opposition MPs questioned whether the delay was due to financial constraints or administrative inefficiencies.

“The census is crucial for national development and proper governance,” one opposition member stated. “Without accurate population data, how can we plan effectively?”

The absence of updated census data has raised concerns among policymakers and economists. The information gathered in a national census is used to guide government policies on housing, employment, and social services. Additionally, population figures play a role in electoral processes, as they influence constituency boundaries and representation.

Experts warn that without current data, decisions may be based on outdated estimates, potentially leading to inefficient allocation of resources.

While the government insists the census remains a priority, no firm timeline has been given, leaving questions about when the population count will finally take place.
