All Saints United and Grenades stay in Premier Division title hunt with narrow wins

Championship contenders All Saints United and Grenades were both 2-1 winners as the hunt for title honours continued in the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) Premier Division on Sunday.

Defending champions All Saints United maintained their one-point advantage at the top of the standings with a narrow 2-1 victory over Potters Tigers when they met in the feature match of a triple-header.

United were two-nil up within the first 35 minutes of the contest with national striker Raheem Deterville putting them ahead on minute 16. Tiquan Isaac doubled United’s lead in the 34th with a close range effort. Striker Keon Greene pulled a goal back for Tigers in the 41st minute but it was not enough to help his team salvage a draw.

The win lifts United to 43 points from 16 showings at the top of the standings as they seek to hold on to the slim one-point advantage for the remainer of the group stage. The loss was Tigers’ eighth in 15 matches as they remain on 17 points at mid-table.

Meanwhile, Grenades FC were 2-1 winners over John Hughes as they remain within striking distance of United on the standings on 42 points.

Troy Jules put John Hughes ahead on minute 23 before Luis Cuidad Labrada found the equalizer for Grenades in the 31st minute. Barrington Blake secured all three points for Grenades with a 74th minute conversion.

The loss was John Hughes’ seventh in 15 matches as they remain on 18 points.

In Sunday’s other clash, FC Aston Villa defeated Pigotts Bullets 2-1 for their eighth win in 16 matches, moving to 27 points in the sixth position on the standings.

Villa’s two strikes came early in the first half with Rakeem Joseph and Tyrik Hughesnetting in minutes nine and 11 respectively. Shemoi Andrew scored the lone goal for Bullets in minute 76 as they remain on 28 points from 16 matches.
