AP—Tropical Storm Helene has formed in the Caribbean Sea and is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane as it moves north toward the U.S., according to forecasters.
Heavy rains and large waves have already begun affecting the Cayman Islands, prompting some residents in Florida to evacuate or prepare by filling sandbags in anticipation of flooding.
Hurricane Watches Issued
Hurricane watches are in effect for parts of Cuba, Mexico, and along the Florida coastline, including Tampa Bay. Additionally, a tropical storm warning has been issued for parts of the Florida Keys.
Current Storm Status
As of Tuesday, Helene was located 175 miles south of the western tip of Cuba, with sustained winds of 45 mph. The storm is moving northwest at 12 mph and is expected to become Hurricane Helene on Wednesday, potentially escalating to a major hurricane by Thursday.
In preparation, federal authorities are deploying generators, food, and water supplies, along with search-and-rescue and power restoration teams, according to White House spokesperson Jeremy Edwards.
