RESIGNATION LETTER: Long-Time UPP Member Winston Henry Steps Down, Urges Leadership to Address Divisions

Winston Henry has resigned from the United Progressive Party (UPP), urging the party to confront and resolve its internal divisions.

In a candid letter to Senator Shawn Nicholas, General Secretary of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Winston Henry announced his resignation after over 20 years of service, including roles as chair of the Rural East Branch and Public Relations Officer. He expressed concern about growing internal divisions and the leadership’s failure to address them, leading to a divisive atmosphere within the party.

Henry noted a shift from open discussions to an “us versus them” mentality and criticized the lack of efforts to unite the party post-convention, contributing to dwindling public confidence. Despite his departure, he remains committed to the party’s principles and plans to pursue a role as a political commentator to speak more freely on political issues.

In his letter, he recommended conducting a public assessment, creating a “truth commission” for grassroots feedback, and improving communication among MPs. He urged the leadership to level the playing field for candidates and maintain a strong media presence to shape the national agenda.

Henry concluded with hope for the UPP to implement necessary changes to restore unity and enhance its prospects for governance in Antigua and Barbuda. While he won’t make the letter public, he plans to discuss his decision and thoughts with Dave Lester Payne.
