Peace Match Brings Rivals Together for Unity and Reconciliation in Antigua and Barbuda

Last evening’s Peace Match, led by Prime Minister Gaston Browne, was a significant step toward fostering community unity and reconciliation. The event, held at the Antigua Technical Centre, brought together former rival gang members in a display of sportsmanship and commitment to ending violence.

The 2 Drilly Crew triumphed over Grays Farm Turf with a close 7-5 victory. Both teams faced three penalties each, adding to the match’s intensity and excitement.

Prime Minister Browne, who attended and supported the event, lauded its success. “It’s remarkable to see such unity and peace here,” he said, observing the players. He emphasized the role of sports in reconciliation and in offering youth positive alternatives. “Programs like these are vital for keeping our young people on a constructive path and helping them build a peaceful future.”

The match was designed to break down barriers by mixing players from both teams, symbolizing the event’s aim of unity. This gesture highlighted the event’s purpose beyond just a game—it was a meaningful effort to heal divisions and promote peace.

The evening ended with a group photo of all participants, celebrating a successful initiative to use sports as a tool for community cohesion. The Prime Minister thanked everyone involved and called for continued support for efforts to unite the community.
