The government’s Heavy-Duty Operators’ Training Academy is making strides towards launch, following its first meeting with key stakeholders on Tuesday. Chaired by Minister of Works Maria Bird-Browne, the meeting included Education Minister Daryll Matthew and representatives from various ministries and institutions, such as the Antigua and Barbuda Institute of Continuing Education (ABICE).

Senator Clement Antonio, overseeing the academy’s establishment, confirmed that a preliminary curriculum is being developed, which will combine theoretical safety training with practical equipment operation.

The academy aims to train men and women in operating heavy machinery, including backhoes and cranes, with the first cohort expected to start in January 2025.

The application process will open soon, providing certification to help fill a critical skills gap in the industry.

Antonio praised the government’s support for this initiative as a significant step forward.
