The Police are reporting that illegal drugs worth $12,154,498 were destroyed during an exercise conducted on Friday, June 2.
This large volume of drugs comprised 1,745.83 pounds of cannabis; 729 cannabis plants; 1,716 cannabis seedlings; 86.3 pounds of hashish; 18.1 pounds of cocaine; and two ecstasy tablets.
Of the marijuana that made up the largest batch of drugs destroyed today, a total of 1,675.37 pounds was illegally imported into the country. That amount also accounts for $10,052,220 of the overall value of the destroyed drugs.
These substances were disposed of by the Courts and were the proceeds of arrests and seizures by the Police.
Accordingly, Police Commissioner Atlee Rodney is commending the hard work of the Narcotics Department and the support from the Customs and Excise Department.
He is also encouraging the public to appreciate the work of the law-enforcement agencies, and to regard their efforts as a step closer to reducing the influx of illegal substances.
The destruction exercise was supervised by Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh and other officials from both Courts.
