Mass Shooting at Russian School Leaves 15 Dead

A mass shooting at a Russian school has left 15 people dead and at least 24 others injured.

Reports state that a gunman opened fire killing 11 children, 2 educators and 2 security guards before killing himself at the scene. The incident happened at a school in Izhevsk where the killer was a former student. The attacker has been named as Artem Kazantsev and is said to have been armed with two pistols.

Videos posted online showed children and adults running in panic and confusion while the shooting was taking place. Other footage also showed blood on a classroom floor and a bullet hole in a window, and children crouching down under classroom furniture. Another online video shows the dead body of the gunman on the floor. He wore a T-shirt with a Nazi symbol and a balaclava.  

The country has since declared a mourning period lasting until 29 September. According to his spokesperson, Russian President Vladimir Putin is “deeply mourning” the deaths and denounced the shooting as an “inhuman terrorist attack”

Investigations are ongoing into the matter, and police have stated that they are currently searching the home of the perpetrator.
