Cuba Approves Same-sex Marriage in Referendum

Same sex marriage is now legal in Cuba after a new family law was approved yesterday. The law will allow same-sex couples to marry and adopt and is intended to redefine rights for children and grandparents.

It will also allow surrogate pregnancies, broader rights for grandparents in regard to grandchildren, and protection of the elderly and measures against gender violence.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel commented on the law saying “Most of our people will vote in favor of the code, but it still has issues that our society as a whole does not understand,”

The measure containing over 400 articles was approved by 66.9% to 33.1%, the president of the National Electoral Council, Alina Balseiro Gutiérrez said in a news interview.

Meanwhile, several religious leaders have voiced concerns that this new law could weaken nuclear families.
