GUYANA- Students, Faculty Narrowly Escape Burning School

At least 421 teachers and students of the St George’s Secondary School in Georgetown miraculously escaped uninjured after a fire enveloped the historic structure in a short space of time.

According to the EMS, by the time they arrived on the scene on Wednesday afternoon, the building was fully ablaze.

A teacher of the school recounted that she was about to start a class with a group of form 1 students when a cleaner informed them that smoke was emanating from the Social Studies room.

They hurriedly exited the building, along with the rest of the school population. Upon reaching outside, the flames began spreading like wildfire.

Education Minister Priya Manickchand confirmed that the Ministry is currently seeking accommodation for the displaced students and teachers.

Meanwhile, Fire Chief Gregory Wickham says that an earlier call to the Fire Service could have saved the building. He claims that the Fire Service was only called to the scene after the building was fully enveloped by the inferno.

Further investigations into the actual cause of the fire are ongoing.
