An attorney at law is standing firm to his beliefs that the judicial system in Grenada is not a failure, and is calling on Grenadians to not compare the Tri- Island with the United States of America.
He said it is not fair and the laws in the first world country are draconian in comparison to Grenada and other Caribbean Islands.
Attorney at Law, Jerry Edwin was referring to murmurs made by Grenadians on the failure of the local judicial system to hand down stiffer penalties on Grenadian Treverson Roberts for the sexual assault of a five-year-old boy left in his care.
Roberts who lives in New York pleaded guilty to charges in Grenada in 2019 and was fined $1,500 and mandated him to pay $600 compensation to the victim.
Edwin weighs in on the issue after Roberts pleaded guilty in a US Federal court on Monday to engaging in illicit sexual conduct with a minor in a foreign place.
He now faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.
Edwin compares the United States laws against Child Sexual abuse to that of Grenada’s and by extension the Caribbean.
The Laws of Grenada Edwin says is not a failure, and judgment can only be handed down based on the evidence before the courts.
In some instances, people blame the Royal Grenada Police Force, the National Security Minister, and the judge who handed down what they term to be a mediocre sentence.
It’s not about blaming people, the United States he says has jurisdiction to trace anyone citizen convicted of a crime and sentence them according to their laws.
Grenada did not fail.
