St Vincent – Over in St. Vincent the struggle is real as fisherfolks are now calling on Government to implement a rebate system for them. Presently the fishing industry is not lucrative and fishermen risk their lives with no tangible benefits.
According to President of the Fisherfolk Organization in St. Vincent Winsbert Harry very soon the gas price will increase therefore there will be no other choice than to increase the price of fish, which is something the fishermen do not want to do especially during a time when people are economically challenged.
Harry is of the opinion that the high gas prices is obstructing them form plying their trade effectively. He added that there is a demand for healthier eating in St. Vincent, however they will not be able to meet those demands if the gas prices remains as it is or continues to increase. The business, presently is not lucrative Harry added.
The Majority of the fishing vessels Harry said burns approximately seventy-five thousand EC dollars’ worth of fuel each year and that was when the price was reasonable, however with the increased prices the possibility exists that it may be more this coming cycle.
Fisherfolk the president said may not be able to ply their trade due to the high gas price.
Therefore, there needs to be Government intervention on their behalf.
