National Heroes Day Celebrated

Wreath-laying rituals in honour of the five deceased heroes and a commemoration of the lone surviving national hero, Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards, were held on National Heroes Day.

At the National Heroes Park, Governor-General Sir Rodney Williams and Prime Minister, Gaston Browne laid wreaths at the tombs of Sir Vere Cornwall Bird Snr and Sir George Herbert Walter.

Following that, flowers were put at the Prince Klaas Monument in honour of King Court Tackey, followed by a ribbon ceremony at the Public Cemetery in honour of Dame Georgiana ‘Nellie’ Robinson and Sir Lester Bryant Bird.

Because of constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremonies were cut short this year, with no speeches given and attendance reduced.

However members of the public have expressed concerns as to the lack of promotion placed on this day in hour of our national Heros.

With the death of Sir Lester Bird earlier this year,  the country now only have one living National Hero, Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards.
