The south wall of the historic Antigua Recreation Grounds has been transformed into a depiction of patriotism and National pride by the students of five secondary schools.
On Wednesday 27th October, the Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission, with the support of the Department of Culture and the Ministry of Education, unveiled the 40th Independence Mural.
Over a two-week period, students, and art teachers, from the Sir Novelle Richards Academy, All Saints Secondary School, Glanvilles Secondary School, Trinity Academy and St. Mary’s Secondary School expressed their uniqueness and creativity by painting some of Antigua and Barbuda’s National symbols, to commemorate our Nation’s 40th Anniversary of Independence.
Ms. Dornalyn Beazer, Assistant Manager of PR & Marketing at the State Insurance Company Ltd., applauded the students for their hard work, and expressed great optimism that similar projects around the island will follow suit.
In his remarks, the Minister for Education, Sports and the Creative Industries, Honourable Daryll Matthew, thanked the two main corporate sponsors, State Insurance Company Ltd., and Paint Plus, for generously supporting the project, and the students, at a time when most private entities were not in a position, due to the their respective financial limitations.
The project was spearheaded, and supervised, by well-known Antiguan artiste Mr. Kallan Greene, and Mr. Melville Richardson, Education Officer – Visual Arts within the Ministry of Education.
