Observer Media- Antigua and Barbuda withstood a late barrage of attacks by Grenada to claw their way to a 1-0 victory in their CONCACAF Group A World Cup Qualifier at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground on Fridayafternoon.
The Benna Boys went ahead on minute 20 when England-based midfielder Rhys Brown latched ontoan accurate pass from veteran striker Peter Byers just around the penalty spot before slamming a loweffort into the far right hand corner of the Grenada net in front of a small but supportive crowd at the venue.
The home team however, came under heavy fire in the final 20 minutes of the contest as Grenada launched an all-out attack in a desperate attempt to find the equalizer and take at least a point from the crucial match.
Several of their efforts from in and around the area however missed the target while goalkeeper. Molvin James was called upon to make crucial stops on at least two occasions.
The victory puts the Antigua and Barbuda Benna Boys at the top of the standings with seven points after three matches.
Montserrat are second with five points while El Salvador are third with four points. El Salvador was however slated to face the bottom of the table USVI late Friday. Grenada remains on three points from their three showings and second from bottom in the Group A standings.
Antigua and Barbuda will now travel to El Salvador where they will face that country’s senior nationalmen’s team in a crucial clash that could decide the winners of Group A.
