Antigua and Barbuda’s drive to achieve herd immunity is being affected by the drastic reduction in the number of people being vaccinated each week.
Vice-Chair of the National Technical Working Group on Covid-19 vaccines Dr Courtney Lewis, says there appears to be a fall in vaccine education, hence a low turnout.
“The biggest problem is when the whole vaccination process in Antigua, Phase 1 began when we started vaccinated people. Once the supply began to ran short, what happened was that the vaccination process slowed down and the education process follows suit which should not have happened.”
“We the health care providers need to take the onus of that fall. We should not have allowed the education or the update on the vaccine trials and development to slow down and the public has to depend on the social media or internet to get information,” the Vice-Chair added.
Just over 1000 people received shots in the past week, in contrast to the over 10,000 that were vaccinated during the first week of the inoculation programme.
