Insurance companies have said that in the last one year, they have had the lowest number of insurance claims due to house burglary. German insurance industry organization GDV has said that ever since the record of insurance began to be recorded, the lowest claims were received only last year.
In the year 2020, people made claims for 85,000 cases of burglary in Germany. GDV, while presenting the report last year, said that this number was 10,000 less than a year ago. The recording of its figures in Germany began in 1998. GDV chief Yorg Asmussen said, “The biggest reason for the decrease in the incidence of burglary is that people spend more time in the house than ever before. This has happened because of the coronavirus epidemic.” He said, “The thieves could not get many opportunities for their exploits.”
The insurance organization said that in 2020 they were presented claims of Euro 23 million (about 27 million dollars). This amount was 70 million euros less than the year behind it. Average claims for personal insurance were also reduced by about 10 per cent.
However, there is also a truth that in all 16 states of Germany, the trend of decreasing insurance claims year after year has been seen for many years. Before the arrival of the coronavirus epidemic, burglary theft had started to decline a little bit continuously.
Since 2015, such burglaries had started to reduce in every region of Germany. More investment is being made now than ever before in making many houses and apartments safe. Yorg Asmussen believes that “that investment is showing effect.” He said that about half of the halfway attempts to thwart him failed because the thieves could not enter the house as quickly as possible.
Between 2008 and 2015, there was a steady increase in burglary and burglary insurance claims reached 167,136 in one year in 2015. This was almost double the number of last years.
