An essential worker diagnosed with COVID-19 has sadly, died from illnesses related to the disease.
The patient, a fifty-three (53) year old female, was admitted to the hospital on January 24, 2021 in respiratory distress and clinical signs of COVID-19. Following hospital admission guidelines the patient was tested for COVID-19 prior to admission.
This test returned a positive result and the patient has been undergoing treatment since then which included prolonged ventilator support. Despite our best efforts, the patient died this morning March 1, 2021 at 8:20am.
“Our hospital mourns the passing of this essential worker,” said Dr. Albert Duncan MSJMC Medical Director. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and her colleagues at this time.”
“A grateful nation has watched and rightly praised healthcare workers for their heroic work. But essential work extends beyond health care. Although some people have been able to shift their jobs to their homes, thousands of workers have jobs that cannot be done at home—and these workers leave their homes everyday to help maintain a semblance of normalcy for others, at great risk to themselves and their families.”
Added the Medical Director; “As a member of the hospital’s leadership, who leads a team of essential workers, I think I speak for many of us when I say – Although grateful, we would take less thank yous for more mask wearing.
We would be ok with less lauding, if it means that people are adhering to safety protocols. If the current trajectory continues and we don’t gain control of this urgently, it will become harder to bring under control. This pandemic requires us to work together to bring it under control urgently.”
