Government to appoint Special Constables to ensure stricter compliance of Covid protocols

Around fifty (50) civilians will be selected and trained as special constables. These additions to law enforcement will be tasked with ensuring that there is a greater compliance by members of the general public with all covid-19 protocols.

“The Attorney General has been asked to recruit these persons. They will be civilian persons who are apart of the established government services where they may not be fully occupied and we believe we may be able to divert some of those resources, give them the necessary training and equip them under the law to be able to support the police in these measures,” Nicholas explained on Thursday morning during the Post Cabinet Press Briefing.

Government also took the decision to grant police officers the power to issue tickets to curfew violators instead of the initial enforcement of detaining those persons at the various police stations.

Fines were not however increased.
