Barbuda Council taken before the Industrial Court by Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union

The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union and the Barbuda Council will appear before the Industrial Court tomorrow Thursday 21st January 2021 at 10 am for an Urgent Case Management Conference.

The Union filed a matter before the Industrial Court as a Trade Dispute on Wednesday 13th January 2021, and subsequently served Court documents on the Council Secretary Paul Nedd in Barbuda yesterday.

The reference which was filed under Section 19 (2) of the Industrial Courts Act sought the Court’s intervention on the allegation that the Council failed to respond to the Unions proposals for negotiation of a Collective Agreement on behalf of Council employees.

The Matter was scheduled several times before the Labour Department but the Council failed to make an appearance. The Parties were cautioned by the Court from participating in strikes and lockout. The Union is seeking improved working conditions and benefits for Council workers in Barbuda.
