Police Officer et al accused of bribing rape victim into dropping case

Two men are accused of perverting the course of justice after they allegedly bribed a young girl to drop a case of rape brought against one of the accused,a police officer.

It is believed that the officer of Dominican descent, offered an 18 year-old girl who he was charged with raping- money if she requested that the legal action against him be stopped.

It is believed that after several calls from the accused, the victim is said to have written to the Director of Public Prosecutions requesting to withdraw the case.  As a result the case was withdrawn by Justice Iain Morley in the High Court in May.

The second man accused of perverting the court of justice is a business man who allegedly asked the victims father to ask her mother to have the case thrown out.  He reportedly offered to give the victim a scholarship if his request was met.

The two men appeared before Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh today but were denied bail despite the valiant effort of one of the lawyers in the case, Wendel Robinson.

Robinson and Andrew O’Kola, the lawyer representing  the officer, will be applying to the High Court for bail instead. The matter was adjourned for committal on February 22.
