One hotel has signaled that it will not reopen its doors this month, as was planned.
On the weekend, Prime Minister Gaston Browne said the Verandah Resort has indicated that it will reopen in the new year, 2021, instead.
He says the decision, in part, is due to the lockdown of the United Kingdom, which is now dealing with a second wave of the COVID-19 virus.
Meanwhile, Browne says there has been some level of recovery in the last few months, with a number of hotels reopening and over 4,000 persons returning to work.
He says this was a relatively quick recovery for some, but the Government was anticipating that all hotels would have been reopened by December, with a 50-60 percent occupancy, leading to a faster recovery.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister says the Government will be paying keen attention to the recent win by the Democratic Party in the United States, as its senators may push for statewide lockdowns, a position that President Donald Trump has resisted.
Browne says his Administration had resisted closing the country’s borders in March, but was forced to do so, constructively, after a number of airlines cancelled service.
According to him, the country is again facing a similar situation, since British Airways has cancelled its remaining flights here due to a month-long lockdown in the UK. The airline is scheduled to resume commercial operations in December.
