Plant Protection Unit hopes last week’s flooding has destroyed significant part of local snail population

Chief Plant Protection Officer Dr. Janil Gore-Francis is hoping that last week’s flooding has eliminated a significant number of the Giant African Snails.

However, she is aware that the snails might have sought higher ground, such as trees, in order to escape imminent peril.

Dr. Gore-Francis says it will take an intensive effort among a number of stakeholders to rid the country of this invasive species.

This can be done over a period of three years once everyone is on board, she says. This is why her Department has endeavoured to get householders involved in collecting the snails, since the longer the country waits the worse the problem will become.
