Now is the time to find Halycon a new home, says activist, who fears displacement will cause the band’s demise

Jason “Mud Man” Shaw, a community activist in the Rural West constituency, is calling for urgent attention to be given to finding a permanent home for the Halcyon Steel Orchestra.

The steelband was formerly domiciled in the Knuckle Block area, but was displaced by the construction of the Community Centre.

Shaw says the band now operates from a space at the Multi-purpose Cultural Centre, but he is fearful that this displacement will push the band out of existence.

Shaw is suggesting that a space be made available in the vicinity of the Community Centre, so the orchestra can return to its original location until a new home is sourced.

The original plan for the development of the Knuckle Block area had included a place for the steelband to be located nearby, Shaw says.

However, it was altered somewhere along the line, and the time has now come to ensure that the band has a place to call its own.
