Head of the Traffic Department Assistant Superintendent of Police Rodney Ellis is calling for an increase in fines for traffic infractions and a longer period of suspension of a driver’s license.
This, Ellis says, is because there are too many accidents being caused for “silly” reasons- one major concern being the lack of attention by drivers.
The Traffic head says while he does not have any control over the penalties handed down by the magistrate, something more needs to be done as a deterrent to drivers to cause them to be more careful on the country’s roadways.
Ellis says that he still wishes to see a closer collaboration with the police, other relevant stakeholders and the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board in which persons convicted of a traffic offence are made to redo their driving test or undergo a defensive driving course.
