OCS Principal believes the challenges of the new teaching system can be met with support from parents

Principal of the Ottos Comprehensive School Foster Roberts says that, despite things not being 100 percent at his school plant, teachers will be working feverishly to ensure that students are educated in a safe environment.

Roberts says the challenge will come into play next week when all students should be at school at the same time.

This week, students are returning to the school plant on a phased approach, with First formers today, Second formers on Tuesday, and continuing in this fashion until all forms return.

Roberts admits that teachers will be pushed to the limit because of how classrooms have been set up, in addition to having to deliver online classes.

Therefore, he says the support of parents will be greatly needed during this period.

Students will attend classes on alternating days, with First, Fourth and Fifth Formers turning out to school on days one, three and five, to be followed by Second, Third and Fifth Formers going to classes on Day two, four and six – alternating days.

According to the Principal, when students are not on the school plant they should be engaged in online learning. He says parents’ support, electronic devices, and Internet connectivity will be very important during this time to navigate the blended-learning platform.

Addressing over 120 First Formers during this morning’s general assembly, Roberts admonished the new students to work hard and always strive for excellence at what he deems the “greatest secondary school in Antigua and Barbuda.”

He also reminded them of the importance of observing the health protocols, including washing and sanitizing their hands.

The Principal says the faculty and ancillary staff are as ready as can be.  Once all the other systems are put in place to “operate fairly with the children,” the job can be done, he says – but not without support of the parents.

Principal Roberts harbours some concerns about the online learning platform that will be adopted by several schools, as part of the Ministry of Education’s blended-learning platform.

He says he foresees an issue with this platform, given that many students are coming from homes in which some parents are unemployed and unable to maintain their bills.

Meanwhile, the Principal is calling on parents to invest in their children’s education by purchasing a computer.  This will ensure that they are able to keep up with the pace of their schoolwork, he says.
