Extreme heat will continue through this week, MET Office warns, after Sunday’s temperature rose to 118 degrees

The Acting Director of the MET Office, Dale Destin, says the extreme heat the country has been experiencing for over a week will continue, bringing temperature of over 40 degrees Celsius into this week, as well.

Destin says the high temperature, about which hundreds of residents have been complaining, is due in part to the light winds being experienced across the island.

He says this will continue to be the prevailing weather condition this week, which saw Sunday’s temperature rise to 48 degrees Celsius, or 118 degrees Fahrenheit.

Destin says that Hurricane Teddy is a contributing factor to the winds being low at this moment, but this is not an unusual occurrence.

He explains that in August and September – the most active months of the hurricane season – tropical cyclones tend to suck up all the winds and allow for very light and warmer conditions to prevail across the entire region.

According to Destin, vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and persons with underlying medical issues, should continue to take extreme caution and avoid outside activities.

Meanwhile, Destin says the high-surf advisory in effect since late last week would be discontinued today, September 21.

Some residents reported they were unable to take their usual weekend visits to the beach due to the rough seas and high, strong waves.  They are hoping that things will return to normal this weekend, but Destin says otherwise.
